Ballaghisheen River

Kerry, Munster Grade: 4 1

Brief Description

Mainly four drops, which are narrow and overgrown in parts.

River Description

Four main drops. There are couple of narrow rapids at top. Then into the drops, they are all are in 2 to 3 metre range. The last drop has a rib of rock in landing pool so it needs a bit more water than rest, having said that, you shouldn't be here in big water.

Safety & Access
Hazards

- Overhanging branches
- Shallow plunge pools
- Good boof essential

Access Issues

- Parking is limited.
- Last drop almost in farmyard so be polite.

Water Level Information

This is not a big water river. If you look under bridge and it seems you can just float a boat its about right. Its bog fed so slow to rise but also holds its water well. The last time I was here the Flesk was low 60cm but there was just enough here.

Directions to Put-in

Ballaghisheen Pass, near Glencar in Kerry.
Head out of Killarney towards Killorglin turn left after Fossa and keep going pass Gaddagh, Lough Acoose, Caraghbeg, Climbers Inn, and eventually arrive at put in for Upper Carragh. Turn right and drive 2km or 3km more. At the next next road bridge is put in for Ballaghisheen.

Directions to Take-out

The river is short enough to walk back to top, the only access is across a farm track, so park considerately and change discreetly.
