About Irish Whitewater

Ireland has many excellent rivers. Some rivers are well known, but there are a lot of rivers that are only known locally, or not known at all.

Irish Whitewater wants you to share this information with everyone. We keep adding to and working on this site. The information for these rivers will stay on the net.

Acknowledgments

Irish WhiteWater is developed and maintained by Seanie Byrne. I took up kayaking at university in Galway and launched this site in 2006, building and updating this resource for Ireland's paddling community ever since.

Special thanks to:

Ross Lynch for the outstanding logo and graphic design work that gives the site its visual identity.

Ian Roche for his exceptional programming skills and technical expertise in developing and maintaining the river gauge system.

Mike Sweeney and Daithi for pioneering the early gauge infrastructure that has become such a vital resource for the community.

Our early content contributors: Brian Cahill, JK, John Brady, David Pierce, Graham Clarke, Rob Coffey, Peter O'Sullivan, Peter Hanley, Michael Flynn, Ann-Marie Creaven, and Eamonn O Riain deserve particular recognition for their invaluable contributions. Whether writing the early river guides, providing technical assistance, offering feedback, sharing their knowledge, or spending days mapping and documenting Ireland's rivers, their dedication has been instrumental in building this resource.

And to the many, many others who have contributed trip reports, photos, safety information, first descents, and companionship on the water – thank you. This site belongs to all of us.

Inspiration: A special acknowledgment to Mark Rainsley and the UK Rivers Guidebook (UKRGB), whose pioneering work demonstrated what a community-driven online river guide could achieve and inspired us to create a similar resource for Ireland's rivers.

Community Driven

This site wouldn't exist without contributions from the Irish paddling community. River guides, photos, videos, and local knowledge all come from paddlers like you.

Want to contribute? You can:

  • Submit new river information
  • Update existing river descriptions
  • Share photos and videos
  • Report changes in access or hazards
  • Help maintain accurate water level information
